A new assessment by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) concludes that the world community could slow and then reduce global emissions of greenhouse gases (GHGs) over the next several decades by exploiting cost-effective policies and current and emerging technologies.

The right mix of appropriate government regulation, greater use of energy saving technologies and behavioural change can substantially reduce carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions from the building sector which accounts for 30-40% of global energy use, says a new report from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Sustainable Construction and Building Initiative (SBCI).

The UN is cooperating with the institute and will provide technical advice and assist in recruiting professional staff before the programme begins next March, as it shows the power of sport to help countries achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), a set of targets to slash poverty and other global ills by 2015, the world body said.
